Hi,

This is a continuation of my current newsletter, Issue 139, listing various media-rich files of interest to cleaning professionals. As with Issue 139 you will need a high-speed connection to view many of the links on this page.

I suppose I should explain why I include PDF files here. While it's true that PDFs have been around for a long time so they're not considered all that high-techy and new these days. But while they aren't the newest online thing any more they are workhorses of the Internet and very handy for displaying all sorts of technical or heavily illustrated information such as MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) or owner's manuals for cleaning equipment or instructions sheets to name just a few of their uses and are just too important to the cleaning world to ignore.

Plus, I'm too lazy to create a separate page to put them on so I'm just going to throw them in with everything else on my new Free Audio-Visual Files page.

Cheers,

 Videos for Commercials

Want to see a brief movie about why you should let Superior Steam Cleaners of New Jersey clean your carpets? It's a fun little cartoon, and is infotainment as much as anything else. This playful format makes what are very standard selling points much more memorable than they would be if they were simply presented on a webpage or a brochure. Click Here

This second commercial is more informative than the first. I guess that makes it an infomercial. It's on the ISSA website (International Sanitary Supply Association) and the cleaning product they talk about is: Clausen Carpet Solutions - Jetclean which I never heard of before but after watching their clip I was tempted to get one.

 Free Training Videos from Betco.com

I talked about betco.com in my last newsletter. This time I wanted to do more than talk, I wanted to show you their free online training videos. They currently have around twenty of them; I haven't watched them all but they seem to average about fifteen minutes in length. And believe me, you can learn a lot from watching a 15 minute long instruction video!

The ones I reviewed show basic cleaning techniques, the sort of things every cleaning staff needs to know. Many of the videos have versions in both English and Spanish and the four categories their videos are listed under are: Cleaning Basics, Floor and Carpet Care, Disinfection and Sanitation & OSHA Training.

The Betco people sell their own brand of cleaning supplies and they're not shy about promoting them in the videos but the instructions they give you on cleaning techniques will work just fine for any high-quality cleaning products you use.

These videos illustrate important cleaning skills from the pros at Betco. From high-dusting, using disinfectants properly (remember to leave them on for the manufacturer's recommended dwell time) how to dust mop floors, a full discussion on how to maintain carpets and hard floors, a great deal of information on health and safety issues and they also have a nice introduction to cleaning glass professionally. They even go over strategies for cleaning in the most efficient manner possible: clean high to low, wet to dry, sweep or mop from back to front, etc., etc.

One of the videos in the Cleaning Basics section is called: Basic Cleaning Techniques

One of the videos in the Floor and Carpet Care section is: Life Cycle of Carpet Care

Here's a video in their Disinfection and Sanitation section that I particularly like. It's on: Proper Hand Care

And finally here's one of the videos from their OSHA Files section, it's one of the most important videos they have, a subject that every professional cleaner should have at least basic knowledge of: OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens

The Exciting World of PDF files

As with all PDF (Public Document Format) files you need an Adobe Reader to view it. If you don't already have a Reader then you can get it for free at: Adobe.com

Professional cleaners aren't just a bunch of mop-monkeys and being successful in this business really isn't just about working hard, it's at least as much about your professional knowledge and expertise. There is not only a great deal to learn in our field but it's growing more complex all the time. We have to deal with all the issues surrounding green cleaning these days, Indoor Air Quality, Booodbourne Pathogens & issues of ergonomics to name just a few of the subjects we have to know something about.

Luckily a surprising amount of valuable information on these and other important topics for cleaning professionals can be found, absolutely for free, in PDF files.

And speaking of learning about green cleaning, here's a great place to get started:
        The Science of Green Cleaning

Every cleaning chemical has its own MSDS. Here's an example of one:
Clorox® Anywhere Hard Surface™ Daily Sanitizing Spray

Not quite sure how to interpret all the information on your MSDS? The University of Pittsburgh tells you
Everything you need to know to read a Material Safety Data Sheet

Want an eight-step illustrated guide to safely and efficiently damp moping a floor? Want to do it like the pros do? Want to make sure you do it right? Or make sure your employees have an easy reminder around when you're not there?

And, do you also prefer to have it explained to you by a guy who is completely bald, always wears one gold earring and a tight fitting white Tee shirt?
Let Mr. Clean show you how to damp mop the hell out of any floor!

Seventy to eighty percent of all dirt and dust is tracked into buildings on people's shoes. Thirty percent of that dirt is deposited in the first 3 feet from the entrance and nintey percent in the first 25 feet. Learn more in this surprisingly informative two pages on:

 KJZZ 91.5 FM Radio

I thought I would end this article with a sound file from a radio station. It's the brief business biography of a man who after gaining business experience in a very different field took over his father's small, after-hours, office cleaning business and built it into a janitorial empire that cleans over 100,000 restrooms a year.

This podcast is from KJZZ in Arizona, it's part of an ongoing series on the quiet rich. It's about a man with a janitorial business in Oakland, CA - which is about a mile north of where I live. The title of this episode is:
       Not Just a Janitor
