What the Dilution Ratio Means to You

One of the first practical things you learn when you go into the cleaning business is that you have to dilute your cleaning chemicals by the right amount. You can't just use the glug glug glug technique -- you know what I mean, take the cap off and pour a random amount of chemical into your cleaning water. Usually this means that you use more chemical than you need which not only wastes money but often leaves a sticky residue on the surface you were trying to clean.

Another problem cleaners have with chemical dilutions is figuring out how much it will cost per gallon. Most people understand that a higher priced chemical might be more economic because it can be more heavily diluted than another. But exactly how do you calculate this?

The simple, little chart below will help you with these two problems.

You can't just read the label, you gotta do the math.

Common Dilution Rates and Ounces per Gallon
Dilution Rate Ounces per Gallon
1 to 4 32
1 to 5 26
1 to 10 12
1 to 12 10
1 to 15 8
1 to 20 6
1 to 32 4
1 to 40 3
1 to 50 2.5
1 to 60 2
1 to 100 1.25
1 to 128 1
1 to 256 .5
How Much Does It Cost? // How Many Ounces Do I Add per Gallon?
Cost for Dilution Rate (or Ratio): Ounces per Gallon
Divide dilution rate into price per gallon Divide dilution ratio into 128
(there are 128 ounces per gallon)
Example: Example:
1:256 dilution ratio
selling at $11.00 per gallon=
11.00/256=.043
or 4.3 cents per diluted gallon
1:85 dilution ratio=
128/85 or
1.5 ounces per gallon
