Treat stains as soon as possible after staining. The older the stain, the more difficult it will be to remove.
All stain removal methods should be applied prior to laundering washable garments. Stains that have been laundered and dried are almost impossible to remove.
Soaking the stain in lemon juice may remove light stains. If not, use a commercial rust removal product such as Iron Out or Whink. Follow package directions carefully. Launder as usual.
Soaking stains in chlorine bleach is not recommended. Bleach tends to set rust stains in fabrics.
Sponge with rubbing alcohol (or a solution of alcohol and water) and blot quickly with clean dry towel. Repeat several times until no more stain is absorbed into towel. Apply diluted carpet shampoo (1 part liquid carpet shampoo to 4 parts water) with a brush or towel. Let the area dry thoroughly, then vacuum. Repeat if necessary.
